Stunning memoir about Top Chef chef and fan-favorite, Fatima Ali。 This is a book about so much as it was written during Fatima’s illness and then after her death。 It’s gorgeous and yet difficult to read as the hardships faced in her life and within her family’s life were beyond challenging。 It’s a book about strength and love and commitment。 A must read。 Heartfelt thanks to Ballantine - what a gift this arc is。

Fatima had many obstacles when a child and she persevered。 Her dream was to become a chef, and despite ridicule and disdain from many, she accomplished that。 What she didn’t figure on was being diagnosed with a ferocious cancer that would take her life。Fatima combined her story with her mother’s to give readers a more dimensional view Of Pakistani culture, mother-daughter dynamics, and family relations。It’s a heartbreaking book, but it’s a lesson for all of use to love each day because one never Fatima had many obstacles when a child and she persevered。 Her dream was to become a chef, and despite ridicule and disdain from many, she accomplished that。 What she didn’t figure on was being diagnosed with a ferocious cancer that would take her life。Fatima combined her story with her mother’s to give readers a more dimensional view Of Pakistani culture, mother-daughter dynamics, and family relations。It’s a heartbreaking book, but it’s a lesson for all of use to love each day because one never knows when the days run out。Thanks to NetGalley and Random House for the early read。 。。。more

A gorgeous book about two strong women- Fatima and her mother Farezeh- but it's heartbreaking as well。 Nothing was easy for either mother or daughter, not in Pakistan or, at first, I'm the US。 This is Fatima's book but it could not have happened without the input from her mother and from her collaborator Tarajia Morrell。 It's not just about the food, it's about knowing and being true to yourself。 They've managed to keep this honest but not maudlin。 I was not aware of Ali before her untimely deat A gorgeous book about two strong women- Fatima and her mother Farezeh- but it's heartbreaking as well。 Nothing was easy for either mother or daughter, not in Pakistan or, at first, I'm the US。 This is Fatima's book but it could not have happened without the input from her mother and from her collaborator Tarajia Morrell。 It's not just about the food, it's about knowing and being true to yourself。 They've managed to keep this honest but not maudlin。 I was not aware of Ali before her untimely death and this made me wish I'd watched her。 Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC。 An excellent read。 。。。more

A great book club book as well as a great book for those who love watching cooking shows or consider themselves a foodie! 。。。more

Pakistani chef Fatima Ali gained fame on American reality TV, competing on Chopped and Top Chef。 Before dying of cancer in 2019 at the age of 29, she set out to publicize her country's cuisine, to establish her own restaurant empire, to ease child poverty in the streets of Karachi, and to write a book about realizing her bucket list。 Sadly, she didn't have enough time to accomplish all her goals, and thus the subtitle。 She lived a fascinating life and shared all details freely, honoring her fami Pakistani chef Fatima Ali gained fame on American reality TV, competing on Chopped and Top Chef。 Before dying of cancer in 2019 at the age of 29, she set out to publicize her country's cuisine, to establish her own restaurant empire, to ease child poverty in the streets of Karachi, and to write a book about realizing her bucket list。 Sadly, she didn't have enough time to accomplish all her goals, and thus the subtitle。 She lived a fascinating life and shared all details freely, honoring her family members and friends while also calling out those who'd harmed her。 I would love to know what happened to those individuals。 I also would have loved if there had been photos of the author included, but there are many lovely ones available at her website: www。cheffatimafoundation。org Some of the book's chapters are narrated by Fatima herself, and others by her mother; I'm not sure if this was the very best option, but understand that might be the only way to finish a book when the author dies。 Fatima and her mother are both such strong-willed and empowered women, I loved reading their voices, and how they conducted themselves regardless of whatever strict social norms stood in traditionally patriarchal, conservative Pakistan。 Granted, it is very sad that Fatima succumbed to "the ghoul" but I hope this book brings attention to Ewing sarcoma, a little-known pediatric cancer and also to the "level of incompetence" that can be associated with the healthcare management in this country。 。。。more

I’d never watched Top Chef before, but I must have caught the episode of Ellen that Fatima Ali was on because I vaguely knew her story before reading this memoir。 I have a lot of admiration for chefs, and I was a fan of the show Chopped, which Fatima won when she was super young—I think she was just out of the Culinary Institute of America and 22 years old。 Fatima earned a degree of fame from being on Top Chef, but before she could move forward with her plans to bring Pakistani street- and upsc I’d never watched Top Chef before, but I must have caught the episode of Ellen that Fatima Ali was on because I vaguely knew her story before reading this memoir。 I have a lot of admiration for chefs, and I was a fan of the show Chopped, which Fatima won when she was super young—I think she was just out of the Culinary Institute of America and 22 years old。 Fatima earned a degree of fame from being on Top Chef, but before she could move forward with her plans to bring Pakistani street- and upscale-fare to America, she was given a terminal diagnosis of cancer。 She decided she wanted to spend the last year of her life traveling and tasting all the greatest restaurants in the world。 When her illness hobbled her much more quickly than she thought it would, she decided instead that she would spend her final days writing a book。 She writes some of the chapters and her mother writes others and a professional writer helped out in between。 Much of this is about Fatima’s childhood in Pakistan。 She has a great love for her country and cuisine, but it’s even more sexist than America (somehow being a chef is a testosterone-laden profession that discriminates against women even though traditionally women are the main cooks and bakers at home)。 Her mother got a divorce, which was a huge scandal for their socioeconomic group in Pakistan。 This memoir is a fast, compelling read about the challenges both Fatima and her mother faced in Pakistan and here in the States。 It’s really a tragic story of someone with so much promise having her life cut short way too young。After I read this, I streamed Top Chef Season 15, which is set in Colorado。 It was fun for me to see Denver-area restauranteurs judging these chefs。 I kept thinking, oh! I love that restaurant! Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book, which RELEASES OCTOBER 11, 2022。 。。。more

There's just something about food and the people who make it that gets me every time。 This is a fantastic memoir of love, grief, and making the most out of the time that you have on the planet。 Ali and her passion for food shine through and entrench her legacy as a chef, and now, as a storyteller。 I was sobbing by the end of this, it was beautiful and provocative。 I will say that there were places where the novel dragged or included unnecessary detail, or where I didn't personally gel with the w There's just something about food and the people who make it that gets me every time。 This is a fantastic memoir of love, grief, and making the most out of the time that you have on the planet。 Ali and her passion for food shine through and entrench her legacy as a chef, and now, as a storyteller。 I was sobbing by the end of this, it was beautiful and provocative。 I will say that there were places where the novel dragged or included unnecessary detail, or where I didn't personally gel with the writing, but this is one of those few times where I won't dock a star for it because the novel was that good。 This really is a love letter to food, family, motherhood, and the power of bringing people together over a table-and the novel drips with it, drenched in love like chashni。 So glad I got to read this one。 Thank you to NetGalley and Random House for the ARC。 。。。more

A carefully written, sensitive look at the life of Fatima Ali。 Her childhood, her explosive growth in the field of cooking, and her untimely death due to cancer are all written beautifully by Tarajia Morrell and Fatima's mother。 I'm so glad I got to read this one。 Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC。 A carefully written, sensitive look at the life of Fatima Ali。 Her childhood, her explosive growth in the field of cooking, and her untimely death due to cancer are all written beautifully by Tarajia Morrell and Fatima's mother。 I'm so glad I got to read this one。 Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC。 。。。more

*This book was received as an Advanced Reviewer's copy from NetGalley。Well, that was gut-wrenching。 I love chef memoirs; just hearing about the trials and lessons experienced in order to make it in such a competitive field is captivating。 While I had never heard of Fatima Ali before this book (which is a shame, I must have just missed the relevant seasons/episodes she was on for the food shows), her story is compelling。Born in Pakistan, Fatima's life follows an unconventional route。 After her mo *This book was received as an Advanced Reviewer's copy from NetGalley。Well, that was gut-wrenching。 I love chef memoirs; just hearing about the trials and lessons experienced in order to make it in such a competitive field is captivating。 While I had never heard of Fatima Ali before this book (which is a shame, I must have just missed the relevant seasons/episodes she was on for the food shows), her story is compelling。Born in Pakistan, Fatima's life follows an unconventional route。 After her mother divorces, she moves to America for a while, back to Pakistan, and this trend continues throughout her life, even as an adult。 The common denominator though is food, and her love for it。 Inspired initially by her father, and by other family members who touch her heart through food, her dream is to be a chef, so she pursues that goal with purpose, even if it is unconventional for her family。This memoir is about more than food though。 If you know Ali's story, then you already know what I'm about to say。 If you don't, and don't want to know what happens in Ali's story, I suggest you stop reading this review here。 Suffice to say, in the middle of pursuing her dreams, Ali hits some pretty harsh roadblocks。 This book covers abuse, death, and many other hard topics。Namely, cancer。 A cancer that ultimately will overcome her and so bring this book to it's tearful end (yes, tearful, I definitely cried reading this one)。 Her passion for life and what she does, for being true to herself despite it not being accepted by her society at times, and her family's outpouring of love for her can't really help but touch you。 And her narrative of the end days of her life, while tragic, are also insightful。 Ultimately, we should all regret that we won't get to taste Ali's food and can only hope she inspired many to carry on in her stead。Review by M。 Reynard 2022 。。。more

*Received an e-ARC through Netgalley。Savor is a heartbreaking memoir written by Fatima Ali, her mother (Farezeh), and Tarajia Morrell。 I have to admit, I did not know much about Fatima before reading this book, except that she was on Top Chef and that she died at a young age due to cancer。 Fatima’s story is truly extraordinary。 Despite all the adversities, she paved her own unique path to accomplish so much。 Her zest for life and her goals was remarkable。 I really enjoyed reading all that she wa *Received an e-ARC through Netgalley。Savor is a heartbreaking memoir written by Fatima Ali, her mother (Farezeh), and Tarajia Morrell。 I have to admit, I did not know much about Fatima before reading this book, except that she was on Top Chef and that she died at a young age due to cancer。 Fatima’s story is truly extraordinary。 Despite all the adversities, she paved her own unique path to accomplish so much。 Her zest for life and her goals was remarkable。 I really enjoyed reading all that she wanted to share with the world even though some aspects of her story were extremely challenging and required putting the book down to digest。 By the end, it felt as if I lost a really close friend。tOverall, I really enjoyed reading this well-written memoir about an extraordinary young woman who lived life so exceptionally。 And it was extremely infuriating to read about her experiences with the American healthcare system as she battled cancer。 。。。more
